For people just discovering your music, who is YSTG?
YSTG (born Malcolm J. Dunn) is an independent rapper , engineer and songwriter from Chicago’s West Side (Austin neighborhood). I blends hip-hop, rap, trap, drill, and R&B, with music centered on real-life experiences, perseverance, relationships, and overcoming adversity. I began rapping at 12 years old, and after the loss of my father, music became an outlet for my emotions and storytelling
What inspired your new single “Take It Off”?
Take it Off is actually a 8 year old track that I decided to rewrite the verses and use a new beat. When i performed the song years ago ppl went crazy about it.
What makes “Take It Off” different from other club records out right now?
Take it Off is different because it’s strictly for the strippers and the tippers. the song gone make em shake cheeks and throw money
How did you approach creating the music video to match the song’s energy?
It’s a simple song so I didn’t need to put much thought into it just the right camera man and the right girl.
Growing up in Chicago, how has the city influenced your sound and style?
Growing up in Chicago I listened to crucial conflict, triple darkness, physcodrama, C.O.G., Snypaz. It pretty much influenced majority of my sound and style. Listening to those artist made me love the Chicago rapid pace style.
You’ve said music became therapy after losing your father. How has that shaped the artist you are today?
It shaped me as an artist cause I’m able to use my pain to tell a vivid story. As I write more songs from the heart and speak on things I go thru in my life music is my therapy.
Fans say you already sound “signed.” How do you stay focused while building independently?
I remember to never get complacent and always remember the job is not done and it always ways to improve my career.
You’ve worked with several Chicago artists. Who’s been your favorite collaborator so far, and why?
I haven’t work with any Chicago artists this yr on my projects. Don’t have a favorite at the moment but if I had to choose I would say my big bro C-Rock (IMG) I like how bro work.
What’s one thing people still don’t know about YSTG that they’ll understand after hearing your music?
I really write and rap about what I go through and what happens in my life no rap cap
Biggest Industry lesson you have learned?
You gotta invest in yourself if you believe in yourself. That’s the only way anyone will take you serious and to keep working you never know who watching.
What’s next for YSTG, and what can fans expect for the rest of the year?
Definitely can expect more visuals, podcast interviews, I got a mixtape called “DEATH TO DRILL” also dropping soon
What makes YSTG the ‘Industries Most Wanted”?
I don’t sound like everyone else I have my own sound. I paint pictures with my lyrics the industry need me
